Quick answer: Start with the simple checks: restart the TV or streaming device, update the operating system, clear app memory/cache where your device allows it, confirm your app-store region is New Zealand, and test ThreeNow on a second device. If only one device fails, the issue is usually local to that TV or stick. If every device fails, check your broadband, DNS, router or a temporary ThreeNow service issue.

First, check if your device is actually supported

Before you spend half an hour changing settings, confirm that ThreeNow supports your device type. The official ThreeNow Help Centre lists Android TV support for devices running Android TV OS 5.1 or newer, including supported Sony, TCL, Philips, Toshiba and Veon Smart TVs. It also says the Fire TV app is available for Amazon Fire TV Stick HD and 4K devices, while other Amazon Fire devices may not be supported.

If your TV is older, the app may still appear but behave badly after an operating-system update. In that case, an external streaming stick or Android TV device can be more reliable than the built-in TV app. For a wider app comparison, see our best streaming apps for New Zealand Smart TV users.

ThreeNow app will not open

When the app refuses to open, the cause is often a stuck app process or old software. Power off the TV or device properly, unplug it for about one minute, then start again. On Fire TV Stick, check for a system update under the Fire TV settings. On Android TV, open device settings and check for system updates before reinstalling the app from Google Play.

Do not install unknown APK files that claim to be a “fixed” version of ThreeNow. Use the official app store for your device. This protects your account, avoids malware and keeps the app compatible with future updates.

ThreeNow black screen or stuck loading

A black screen can come from app memory, protected media playback, a slow connection or a temporary live stream issue. Start with a restart, then test a different show inside ThreeNow. If on-demand works but live TV fails, the issue may be a live channel or event stream. If everything fails, test TVNZ+, YouTube or another legal app on the same device.

If other apps also load slowly, move to the connection checks in our New Zealand fibre and Wi-Fi buffering guide. Live video is less forgiving than films because the stream cannot build a large buffer without falling behind.

Samsung Smart TV fix: clear memory and app data

ThreeNow’s official Samsung help article says clearing app data and cache usually fixes many Samsung Smart TV problems. On newer Samsung TVs, use Device Care from the support settings. On older supported Samsung TVs, use the TV Device Manager or self-diagnosis tools to clear cache and free memory.

  1. Press Home on the Samsung remote.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Support and look for Device Care, Self Diagnosis or TV Device Manager.
  4. Run the scan or clear cache/memory option.
  5. Restart the TV and open ThreeNow again.

If the app still fails, check whether your exact Samsung model is still supported. A supported external device may be easier than replacing the television.

Android TV fix: update, cache and Play Store region

For Android TV, compatibility and the Google Play country setting matter. ThreeNow says Android TVs should be running OS 5.1 or newer, and the official app should be installed from Google Play. If ThreeNow does not appear in the Play Store, the device may be unsupported or the account region may not be set to New Zealand.

  1. Open Settings on your Android TV.
  2. Check About or System Update and install any available update.
  3. Open Apps, select ThreeNow and clear cache.
  4. If the issue continues, uninstall and reinstall ThreeNow from Google Play.
  5. Check that your Google Play country/profile is New Zealand if the app is missing.

For Android TV boxes, be careful with very old or no-name devices. A cheap box may run Android but not certified Android TV, which can affect official streaming apps and protected playback.

Fire TV Stick fix: use the official app and update Fire OS

ThreeNow’s Fire TV guidance says the app is available for Amazon Fire TV Stick HD and 4K devices. It also recommends running the latest Fire TV software before installing the app. Open Settings, go to My Fire TV, choose About, and check for a system update. After updating, search for ThreeNow from the official Fire TV app store and reinstall if needed.

If your Fire TV Stick was set up with an overseas Amazon account, some New Zealand apps may not appear. Do not use unofficial app stores to solve this. Check account and region settings first, then use the official app listing.

ThreeNow says unavailable or the app is missing

ThreeNow says its app is only available for download and use within New Zealand. If you are in New Zealand but the app store thinks otherwise, check the Google Play or App Store country/region settings. On mobile devices, changing country settings can take time and may require a New Zealand payment method, so read the official app-store prompts carefully before changing anything.

If you are outside New Zealand, use the services that are officially available in your current region. This guide is written for viewers in New Zealand using supported devices and official apps.

Live TV buffering, freezing or dropping quality

ThreeNow live channels need stable internet, not just a fast speed-test number. A household can have good fibre but poor Wi-Fi at the television. Test live playback close to the router, then compare it with the TV’s normal location.

  • Use Ethernet if your TV or box has a port.
  • Move the router higher and away from thick walls.
  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for nearby devices and 2.4 GHz for longer range.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups and game updates during live viewing.
  • Restart the router before an important live event.

For sport, prepare earlier than kickoff. Our New Zealand live sports viewing guide explains how to plan around NZST/NZDT timing and device checks.

Sign-in problems and account checks

If ThreeNow signs you out or fails after login, try signing in on a phone or laptop first. If the account works there, return to the TV and enter the code again. Avoid typing passwords with a TV remote if a QR code or activation link is offered. Make sure the clock and time zone are correct on your device, because some apps are sensitive to incorrect system time.

Use a unique password and do not share one-time login codes. If you used a shared TV in a rental, motel or workplace, sign out when you finish.

Use a backup plan for important shows

For finales, live news, sports or family viewing, test ThreeNow before the programme starts. Keep one backup option ready: phone casting, laptop HDMI, another Smart TV app or a streaming stick. The goal is not to overcomplicate your setup; it is to avoid troubleshooting when everyone is already waiting.
